The size of the stomach is made smaller in a Gastric bypass surgery. To allow the food to bypass a part of the small intestine is the main objective here.

In a gastric bypass surgery with the help of staples a small stomach pouch is created that helps in restricting the intake of the food. In addition to this other portions bypasses are the upper portion of the small intestine and the rest of the stomach. For the food to directly enter the middle section of the small intestine this makes a way. This leads to mal- absorption of consumed food.
