Colon Cancer

The Colon is the large Intestines & forms a part of the digestive system. It’s function is to remove water salt and some nutrients from the food intake and convert it into stool. Colon is located in the abdominal cavity. The colons inhabit Billions of bacteria which are responsible for the fermentation of unabsorbed materials. Its contents are excreted out of the body by the muscle lining of the colon which helps in squeezing.

What is Colon Cancer?

Cancer that initiates in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum i.e. the end of the colon is the Colon cancer. This cancer is intiated in the lining of the colon or rectum. Usually all colon cancers which gradually turns cancerous begin as non-cancerous (benign) polyps.

Causes of Colon Cancer

This disease does not have a single cause, but one may be more prone to a colon cancer:
  • If he is more than 60 years of age
  • If the red or processed meats intake is a high
  • If one has colorectal polyps or other inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease or have ulcerative colitis
  • Family history of colon cancer or breast cancer
  • Some genetic syndromes like Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), also known as Lynch syndrome can be the major factors.
  • Colon Cancer may also be triggered by Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol.

Colon Cancer Symptoms

There are no specific symptoms in many cases of colon cancer., however, colon cancer may be indicated by the following symptoms:
  • Pain and tenderness in lower abdomen
  • Passing of Blood in the stool
  • Changes in bowel habits like narrow stools, Constipation, Diarrhea or other.
  • Abrupt loss in Weight

Colon Cancer Diagnosis

A Colon cancer can be confirmed from the following tests:
  • Colonoscopy: into the rectum an endoscope is inserted and through the colon advanced, through this the doctor can examine the entire colon.
  • Sigmoidoscopy: In this in the rectum an endoscope is interested and moved alon the left side of the colon. the middle and right sides of the colon cannot be viewd by this procedure.
  • Colon biopsy
  • Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) along with Complete blood count (CBC) to check for anemia and
  • Colon function tests
  • CT , MRI or PET scans of the abdomen, pelvic area

Colon Cancer Treatment

Like all cancer treatments, the stage of the cancer and the general condition of the patient determine partly the Colon Cancer treatment. One or combination of the following methods is used in general for the treatment:
  • Surgery : is done to remove cancerous cells & is known as colectomy
  • Chemotherapy: cancer cells are killed in this procedure
  • Radiation therapy: cancerous tissue is destroyed in this procedure
  • Ablation: cancer cells are burnt in this procedure
  • Cryotherapy : cancer cells are frozen in this procedure
