Angioplasty

a blockage is developed by the deposition of fatty substances in the coronary arteries (arteries supplying blood to the heart). This condition is called as ‘coronary artery disease’ (CAD). This situation might lead to a heart attack as this blockage creates a problem in the free flow of the blood to your heart muscle.

These blockages are treated by Angioplasty which also makes provision for the free flow of the blood. To treat blockages in the coronary arteries it is a non-surgical invasive procedure. An angioplasty reduces the need for medication and eliminates or reduces the number of episodes of chest pain, suffocation etc by restoring the blood flow to the blood-deprived areas of the heart.

Diagnosis

Based on the results of angiography, stress test and on the symptoms the need for angioplasty is decided. The type of blockages decide the choice of treatment between angioplasty or bypass surgery for treatment of such blockages.

Procedure

Insertion of catheter in the groin is done in Angioplasty procedure and to ensure that you remain relaxed during the procedure before the angioplasty procedure you would be given a mild sedative and some pain killers. A catheter would be inserted into an artery in your groin by the doctor and gently manoeuvred to the heart. There is a balloon at the tip of the catheter which is inflated once the catheter reaches the site of the blockage on the end. This restores the proper flow of the blood to the heart by opening the blockage. In order to keep the artery open often a device called a stent is also placed at the site of blockage.

A stent when placed at the site of blockage acts as a support to keep the artery open thus maintaining the blood flow. It is a small, mesh like metallic device. Two main varieties of stents are used & both the stents serve the function of supporting the open artery. The first is a bare or non medicated stents and the second is medicated or drug eluting stents, which in addition to reduce the chances of recurrence of blockage at the same site releases drug locally at the treated site.

Post-procedure

An average for 2 nights of hospital stay is required in Angioplasty once after the procedure is done. You will be able to resume your routine activities after the discharge from the hospital. To avoid blood clotting in your heart’s arteries your doctor will also prescribe blood thinning medicine, which you will have to take daily. These medicines are essential and unless advised by your treating doctor you should not stop them. Following the instructions of your doctor to keep the condition in check and making some life style changes like diet and exercise would be beneficial. It is recommended to keep in regular touch with your treating doctor.

Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy

In the complete treatment process rehabilitation is one of the very important aspects. Recovery can be faster in a patient with a good rehabilitation program. To help heart patients restore their normal life, Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program, undertaken after treatment of their cardiac disease. You can recover faster, feel better and develop a healthier lifestyle when Cardiac rehabilitation is combined with medicine and surgical treatments.
